My Recent Favorite Vegan Snacks

Since changing over my diet to a more natural plant based, vegan diet, I have discovered some new snacks I can't stop talking about. I couldn't wait to share a few of my favorites that I've been in love with recently.

1. My go to snack any hour of the day has to be hummus! This is an item you can always mix up your meals with. Warming up some fresh baked pita bread or knocking out your daily intake of fresh vegetables for the day has to be the most popular. I always incorporate it into not only my snacks, but also breakfast and dinner meals. It's an excellent decision over your basic mayo or bbq sauces. Hummus provides you with protein and essential vitamins and minerals are bodies need to stay happy.

2. Silk's dairy free vanilla yogurt has to be one of the best tasting yogurt alternative I've come across. This literally tastes like a delicious dessert! This yogurt is dairy free, gluten free, and vegetarian. I wasn't too excited to see the sugar content a little higher than I prefer at 16g, but I usually will eat a single serving over two sittings. It's a great source of calcium, vitamin D, and a plus is that it's low in fat.

3. My go to breakfast when in doubt is always avocado toast. I keep at least three avocados in my home at all times. Does this make me obsessed? I guess I could agree. This meal is an awesome way to kick start your day. I love adding fresh cut tomatoes, cilantro, and pepper for even more added flavor to complete my needy demands of delicious tasting meals. Avocados have tons of health benefits! They're loaded with fiber, healthy fats, and  can even increase the nutrition value of other of other plant foods in your meals. You can't get better than that! I'll take three ;)

4. Dates, dates, dates. I can't begin to express how much I adore these sweet fruits. Can you tell I have a heart for sweets? This is what I usually grab for when I'm just hungry enough for a snack through out the day. Healthy items like dates have a good source of various vitamins, it's a great energy booster, and they're already pre-packaged. This is going to be a great substitute for those overly processed foods like cookies and crackers that might be taking up space in your cabinets right now. Opting out these kind of foods for dates instead will leave your body thanking you later.

5. I am a sucker for cute Pinterest like photos of smoothie bowls. If you follow me on snapchat, this is old news to you. I have a smoothie at least once a day. I swear my body craves for these! This is one I couldn't live without! What I love most about these is that you can get creative and they'll never get boring. You can incorporate different fruits and vegetables each day. Plus, who never liked toppings?! I love to add unsweetened shredded coconut, fresh berries, bananas, chia seeds, cacao powder, and granola. The list is unlimited! 

6. Trader Joes roasted plantain chips, aka my husbands new favorite snack. Now before you get turned off by the title of these chips...lets say you're not alone if you think these are going to taste like bananas. Brandon and I thought so too, but it's just the opposite. Plantain chips taste just like your favorite bag of Lays Potato Chips, except without the artifical crunch. These are more firm in texture. Although these include only one ingredient on the label, these are not packed with vitamins and nutrients as our previous ingredients are. These are pre-packaged so they're going to be higher in fat and calories as we'd expect, but they do contain some natural fibers and typically are low in sodium. I always say moderation is the key, but listen to your body! Health isn't about perfection, its about balance. These are some of my favorite when I'm craving something salty. They do just the trick.

7. If you're a lover of fruit like me, you're going to love this next twist on a favorite snack. Grapes are full of antioxidants, fiber, potassium, and probably one of america's favorite go to form of berries. The list goes on and on. I love all sorts of various colors of grapes, but one of my new favorite ways to eat them is when they're frozen. Yes, I said frozen. Not only does it give the fruit a completely new form of texture, but it also creates a sweetness over the tartness we're all used to when we take that first nibble. This particular tip is going to be great for those of you who always crave sweet flavors. Next time you grab for your favorite Ben & Jerry's ice-cream, try satisfying that sweet tooth with a cup of frozen grapes. It hasn't failed me yet!

8. If I could only pick one fruit to eat for the rest of my life it would probably be mangos...wait maybe pineapple..oh, but how do I love pears..did someone say coconut?! Well, maybe I couldn't choose. I am obsessed with the just mango slices, unsulfured and unsweetened they carry at Trader Joes. I'm almost positive these always end up in my cart when grocery shopping. When picking out items at the market if possible,to purchase a fresh mango, they're much higher in health benefits. In reality, let's just say not all of us are blessed when it comes to cutting real mangos. Dried mangos will contain a higher concentration of calories, but they're still an excellent healthy snack that provides a wonderful source of vitamin A. Vitamin A helps regulate your metabolism and healthy cell growth. When choosing dried fruits, just be aware to make sure you're choosing the ones that don't contain sulfate. These chemicals will help brighten the colors and prevent rotting, but they have no benefit for you. Always read your labels folks!

9. Finishing up strong I'm ending with a food I eat with my breakfast about seven days a week. The old time, classic favorite; apples and peanut butter (or in my case, almond butter). First off let's begin by saying whoever came up with this combination is genius! Everything tastes better with peanut butter. I opt out peanut butter for almond butter because I love the texture, the taste, and the benefits of healthy fats and fiber it adds into my daily diet. This tasty combination is perfect for mid day snacks or right in the morning because it fuels your body for the day. Did I mention this is the perfect idea for the season? Apples are in their prime season right now in the north east and everyone is picking them this time of year. I just did my share of this fall festivity last weekend!
